In 2015, participants from 38 US states, representing professionals in every role, agreed that the top problem is noise in the workplace. Loud machines, rattling conveyors, whirring fans and strident alarms create strong noise pollution, hinder communication and can constitute a danger to the health of employees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers are not the only ones to notice. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/occupational_health\/publications\/noise5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>, <a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ilocis.org\/documents\/chpt47e.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">International Labour Office (ILO)<\/a>, and <a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/docs\/2010-136\/pdfs\/2010-136.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Center for Disease Control (CDC)<\/a> have all acknowledged the health risks to employees in loud environments. The ILO states that more than one third of workers in the manufacturing industry are exposed to hazardous noise, which can lead to irreversible hearing loss and tinnitus.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right\" src=\"\/en_us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/09\/noise-manufacturing.jpg\" alt=\"Enterprise_NA_Manufacturing_Radio_TRBO_Manufacturing\" width=\"250\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/occupational_health\/publications\/noise4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Safe limits<\/a>\u201d for noise are defined by length of exposure as well as loudness. The <a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/SLTC\/noisehearingconservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)<\/a> sets a legal maximum Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dBA for all workers for an 8 hour day, but if noise level is increased by 5 dBA, maximum exposure time drops to 4 hours. It\u2019s also worth noting that even 95 dBA is well short of the pain threshold (140 dBA), so workers may not immediately realize they are being harmed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clearly there is a need for hearing protection in the workplace. Basic ear defenders and ear plugs are often the first choice, but they introduce safety issues of their own: by blocking their ears, workers reduce their situational awareness.
